Its predecessor was sunk during the naval battles around Guadalcanal. The second USS Astoria would earn its name in the ferocious fighting in the Western Pacific's last battles around the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the Japanese home islands.The genesis of this extremely readable book was the curiosity of the author about what his grandfather had done in the Second World War. A decade of research and writing has produced this intimate account of the wartime voyage of the Astoria, from a shipyard in Philadelphia to a shakedown cruise with a patched together crew, to "days of steel rain" fighting Japan kamikazes. It succeeds in sharing the experience of combat as seen through the eyes of its crew. Very well recommended as an excellent read, for the student of the conflict and the general reader.
